Orencio James De Los Santos stamped his class in the 5th Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) – National Sports Association National Open on Sunday at the Fisher Mall in Quezon City.
Fresh from winning a gold medal in the 3rd World Shoto Cup in Russia, De Los Santos earned his seventh straight National Open gold medal in the advance Kata 18 and above seniors category.
“We all had to qualify for national team again. It was my toughest one though, since I had to compete with a bad fever,” said the 25-year old Delos Santos.
Delos Santos said he just kept on reminding himself that his mind is stronger than his body while performing his winning routine.
“It all paid off,” he said.
Teammate Alex Lay of Philippine Typhoons finished second while Karate Developmemt Arts and Sports bet Rhyan Aca finished third.
Filipino-American Joane Orbon captured the gold medal in the seniors women kumite under-61 kgs. class.
Orbon, who flew from the US to compete, outclassed second placer Maibel Arevalo, and third placers Ronalyn Cabhbas and Mary Anne Ong.
“We have a very good National Open this year since we had participants from all over the country. There are representatives from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and National Capital Region — which goes to show they are up to the challenge going to 2020 Olympics,” PKF Secretary-General Raymund Lee Reyes said.
Over 600 karateka joined the tournament.
Reyes said they will now screen players that they will send to compete in the Asian Karatedo Federation Championships in November in Indonesia.
