As the fashion world enters the Spring 2016 season, a dominant trend that may prove confusing for the mortal dresser is described as “Disrupted Modernism.” In fact, even definitions from top fashion houses of the said style show paradox at play, with such images as “bold and defined, yet free,” or “intricate in detail, but still simple and pure.”
To decode the trend, The Manila Times sought the help of key looks released by Calvin Klein Platinum both for women and men’s fashion, in terms of silhouettes, fabrics, accessories and even footwear.
In general, the luxury label, which is available in the Philippines at SM Aura Premiere, sums up the Disrupted Modernism look as a fashion attitude, which “transcends convention.” As such, expect “disruptions” from striking colors, interrupted geometry in shapes and prints, and the like.
More specifically, silhouettes for women are streamlined, and thus modern in look, with layered ease and defined construction. Familiar proportions are made new when unexpectedly combined with conflicting combinations of shapes and surfaces. Distinctive topstitching accentuates definition. Silver exposed hardware set in black adds a rebellious contrast against soft fluid fabrics. Chalky feminine latticed dresses, transparent and open, are rendered graphic when overlaid on black.
Fabrics are infused with color, texture and energy with compact density textures and smooth modern stretch fabrics are defined with contrast stitches; and innovative surfaces are layered with dimension. A palette of unanticipated combinations, provocative clashes shine forth: serenity nude and ice pink are juxtaposed against graphic dynamic red, bright orange and black. Pops of surprising color appear on belts and break up monochrome silhouettes.
Combining all these together, key looks feature intricate simplicity: effortless woven tops and dresses are paired over body skimming viscose sweaters or pleated ribs. Looks are belted for definition, or irreverently layered over streamlined maxis or minis.
Silhouettes for men on the other hand are slim fitting, and cropped proportions with unexpected pairings to create balance and hybridization. Innovative combinations of textural surfaces and trims, linear pop piping, athletic mesh and sweater trims frame hems on shorts, collars, plackets and seams. Exposed silver hardware amplifies zippers, snaps and shiny studs to inject an attitude that is youthful and rebellious.
Fabrics highlight unexpected combinations of texture and hidden innovations. Colors bring unanticipated combinations and provocative clashes with a palette of graphic definition and vibrancy. Black and optical white are paired with sonic blue and speed red, which is also applied as embroidery and piping trims. Rounding up, key looks for men are found in dimensional prints and patterns with playful layers.
Meanwhile, accessories this season are inspired by dynamism and refined performance. Leather goods feature angular constructions with origami details. Volumes are kept clean and geometric while the contours of handbags are highlighted with graphic-pinched cut edge details. For her, shoulder bags are offered in both small and large sizes; for him, a dual function mono shoulder/duffle bag in an elongated boxy silhouette is carried with a sharp slouch for a dynamic yet languid poise.
Footwear for her has fitted ankle and mid calf boots are made on a bevel construction with an inserted conical mid height heel. For him, ankle boots and sneakers are built on a leather wrapped rounded bumper wedge for a tough and sturdy twist. The unisex sandals stand on a similar bumper construction finished with wide banded straps and a hidden buckle detail.
