A barangay captain went berserk and shot three of his siblings dead after he and his daughter were defeated in Monday’s barangay elections.
The police said Manuel Arcenas, 58, of Barangay Manapao, Pontevedra, Capiz province, killed his younger brother Ramon and sisters Jennifer Arcenas Nuyle and Evelyn Arcenas Espinar at 5 a.m. on Tuesday inside the house of Winnie Baticula. Reports said that Manuel, armed with an automatic pistol, barged into the Baticula house at dawn and shot his sleeping siblings dead. The victims, who bore multiple gunshot wounds, did not reach the hospital alive.
Manuel escaped after the shooting.
It was learned that Manuel’s daughter Isabel ran for barangay captain against her uncle Ramon. The latter won.
Police Regional Commander for Western Visayas, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., said a task force had been created to hunt down Manuel.
Deputy Director General Felipe Rojas of the Philippine National Police said that from Sept. 28 to October 28, 25 people have been killed in election-related violent incidents.
“Of the 76 recorded incidents, 46 have already been validated by the investigators as politically motivated incidents (PMI) while the rest are still subject for validation. We are still validating those incidents that were reported in Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas region and those that have occurred in the ARMM,” Rojas told reporters.
