REIGNING champion De La Salle University will face Far Eastern University (FEU) in the opening of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 men’s basketball tournament on July 12, at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers, under coach Juno Sauler, are looking forward to duplicate their impressive performance last season when they beat the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in Game 3 of the best-of-three championship series.
Swing man Jeron Teng, who posted 25 points plus eight rebounds and six assists in the crucial match, believes that the Green Archers have what it takes to defend the crown despite the massive improvement of some of its rival teams.
La Salle’s 6’7 center Yutien Andrada will return to the line-up after resting for one season because of anterior cruciate ligament injury. Jason Andre Perkins, center Nortbert Torres, Almond Vosotros and 6’7 Filipino-American Arnold Van Opstal, among others, are expected to lead La Salle’s campaign this season.
La Salle will also parade rookies Paolo Rivero from La Salle-Greenhills, guard Terence Mustre, and big men Julian Sargent and Abu Tratter.
The La Salle-FEU game is set at 4 p.m. after the 2 p.m. game between host University of the East and University of the Philippines.
In the following day after the opening, Ateneo De Manila University battles Adamson University at 2:00 p.m. followed by National University-UST game at 4ß p.m.
