Philip Delarmino lost to Korean Yoon Deokjae, 29:28, in the semifinals of the muaythai men’s bantamweight 51-54 kg. division on Friday night to settle for the bronze medal in the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG) at the Bien Dong Park in Da Nang City, Vietnam.
Yoon will face Thailand’s Chotichanin Kokkrachai in the finals on Sunday. Kokkrachai defeated Hongkong’s Kwok Wai Hon, 30-27, in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, 2009 Asian Indoor Games bronze medalist Jay Harold Gregorio advanced to the semifinals of the men’s middleweight 71-75 kg. division after his opponent, Uzbekistan’s Ongar Baymuratov, retired after two rounds in their quarterfinals encounter.
”It was an exciting close match between Delarmino and Korea, but in the end the luck was on the Korean side. Gregorio dominated the game and we are happy with the outcome giving him a chance to advance to the finals. The energy here remains high and hopeful for our Muay boys competing in the next couple of days,” said Philippine delegation Chef de Mission Karen Tanchanco-Caballero, the president of the Philippine Amateur Sepak Takraw Association.
Gregorio’s victory assured the Philippines of another bronze, with Jonathan Polosan already making it to the semifinal of the men’s light welterweight 60-63.5 kg. division.
Polosan will face Thailand’s Chonlawit Preedasak on Sunday.
