LEGAZPI CITY: The day biting-Aedes aegypti mosquito claimed six lives and afflicted 953 Bicolanos, the Department of Health (DOH) in Bicol reported. Noemi Bron, DOH public information officer, said six persons died from dengue complications during the first and second quarters this year. She added that dengue statistics in the region are disturbing, with a 21-percent increase over last year’s numbers for the same period. Among the six provinces in Bicol, Camarines Sur ranked first with 437 dengue cases followed by Albay, 215; Masbate, 182; Sorsogon, 99; Camarines Norte, 70; and Catanduanes, 49. During the last five years, some 72 casualties from dengue were recorded across the region with 16,138 people afflicted. Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda of Albay said rapid urbanization and sanitation problems in urban areas contributed to the increasing cases of dengue.
