DENR airs appeal on clean air campaign

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje Jr. is appealing to local government units (LGUs) not to make money out of the campaign against air pollution.

Paje told a news forum that while a number of LGUs are helping the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in its anti-pollution campaign, the intent was not to address the problem.

“They want to make money out of it. They eagerly apprehend smoke belchers for example in Makati City where the fine P5,000. It became a revenue-generating activity ng LGUs,” Paje said.

He said the DENR is hoping to finish this year setting up Air Quality Monitoring Stations in all the cities and municipalities in Metro Manila.

Paje said the DENR plans to set up at least 37 monitoring stations.

“It’s in real time, meaning every minute we can already tell whether the pollution level in Makati [City] is lower than Pasay or the pollution level in Pasay higher than Manila. We can compare them already so we can tell the mayor, your pollution level is very high you can endanger people,” he said.

  1. Why concentrate only in NCR? At Tuguegarao City, most tricycles there still use two-stroke engines and you can just imagine the smoke all these machines emit during rush hours in all the bustling roads around the commercial district. It really sucks!
