DINALUPIHAN, Bataan: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is targeting to include some 3,000 open areas in this town in the government’s National Greening Program.
DENR provincial chief Fred Sadueste said the reforestation is necessary to thwart climate change and lessen flooding.
Ofelia Rodriguez, chairperson of the Mt. View Upland Farmers Association, has called on everyone to help government in the planting of trees.
“Our forests are already bald. Let us unite and help each other to plant more trees,” she said.
Rodriguez is head of the group mostly composed of natives of Batanes residing at the Ivatan community in Barangay Maligaya here.
From the community to the foot of a mountain they called as Mt. Manualan, wide areas of hills lay bare.
Manualan and another mountain, Mt. Malasimbu, are almost barren.
Two bush fires were observed Tuesday in separate areas adjacent to the rough road leading to Mt. Manualan and the Community-Based Forest Management tree plantation.
Tree stumps and left-over of some felled trees were seen being engulfed by the fire. PNA
