ILOILO CITY: The Mines and Geophysical Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has warned residents in the Western Visayas against building their houses in areas with limestone formations.
MGB Regional Director Leo Van Juguan said sub-sur-face assessment or Karst Subsidence and sinkhole mapping conducted last year identified areas with limestone formations such as Buenavista, Guimaras; Passi City in Iloilo and Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental.
These areas with limestone formations tend to go down, that could destroy or knockdown any infrastructure on top of it.
Juguan added there were also visible sinkholes found in some areas in the province of Antique and in Dingle, Iloilo within the Bulabog Putian National Park.
Juguan revealed that some residents just cover the sinkholes with landfill where their houses are located but expressed alarm that erosion caused by rains may affect the area posing possible major disaster.
