Dentists convene for PDA convention

The month of May has brought the country’s dentists together again in the 105th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.

About 10,000 dentists, specialists, technologists, hygienists, local and foreign dental students, deans of schools of dentistry, and dental traders attended the annual affair hosted by the country’s oldest national organization of oral health and dental practitioners.
Dr. Corazon S. Flores, PDA incoming president and the first PDA president from the Laguna Dental Chapter, said the convention—with the theme “Dentistry at its Best”—highlighted cutting-edge technology in oral and dental health care.

Among the topics covered in the symposia were: Prosthodontics, Aesthetic Dentistry, Practice Management, Clinic Design and Ergonomics, Geriatric Dentistry, Endodontics, Dental Implants, New Products and Innovations, Forensic Dentistry, Alliance for Cavity-Free Future, Periodontics, Cariology, Temporo-Mandibular Joint & Pain Management, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Diabetes Mellitus and its Impact on Dental Practice, and Dental Technology.

Other topics covered were Dental Public Health, Dentin Hypersensitivity, Dental Technology, Occupational Health & Safety, and Oral Health Systemic Health Interrelationships.

For many, the convention was a fruitful learning experience as reflected by the many interesting and relevant scientific papers presented.

There was, for example, a special meeting on stem cell therapy during which Dr. Francisco F. Chung of the Makati Medical Center gave a presentation on “Stem Cells In Teeth.” On the other hand, Dr. Anthony Leachon of the Department of Health spoke on “Stem Cell Therapy: Innovation or Safety Concerns.”

There was also a symposium on the relationship between oral health and general health. Dr. Edmund Ofilada spoke on “Oral Health and Systemic Health Relationships”; Dr. Rafael Castillo on “Cardiovascular Diseases and Oral Health”; and Dr. Cecile Jimeno on “Oral Health and Its Relationship With Diabetes Mellitus.”

All in all, it was an unforgettable convention! Congratulations to the convention organizers and PDA officers for a great job!
