Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the government allotted P88 billion in the 2014 and 2015 budgets for the construction of classrooms.
Of this amount, P68 billion has been released to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) by the Budget department.
“The remaining P20 billion is to be requested next month. DepEd is in close coordination with DPWH to ensure that the construction of these facilities will be finished in time for June 2016,” he said in a text message.
Luistro did not comment on the finding of the joint congressional oversight committee the Department of Education has P49 billion unused budget for the construction of school buildings.
The DepEd chief however gave assurances that 61,000 new classrooms will be built in time for the full implementation of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-to-12) program’s senior high school next year.
Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said Luistro has been careful in choosing areas for new classrooms to make sure that these are built where they are needed and no money is wasted.
