The Department of Education (DepEd) seeks to increase its financial assistance for students enrolled in private high school outside Metro Manila beginning school year 2015-2016.
The DepEd subsidizes the tuition of private high school students through its educational service contracting scheme (ESC).
Around 808,970 students enrolled in private high schools were provided financial assistance by the Department of Education (DepEd) for this school year.
Records from the DepEd show that beneficiaries of the program has increased the past few years from 690,000 grantees in SY 2010-2011; 697,800 in SY 2011-2012; 761,314 in SY 2012-2013 and 808,970 in this current school year.
Students in the National Capital Region (NCR) receive an annual subsidy at P 10,000 while non-NCR students are granted a P 6,500 subsidy.
The ESC is a program under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) for students who could not be accommodated in public high schools and are therefore enrolled in private schools with a government subsidy.
The GATSPE aims to democratize and improve access to quality secondary education through government extension of financial assistance to deserving elementary graduates who wish to pursue their secondary education in private schools. It also intends to decongest and improve the quality of learning in public secondary schools, according to the education department. PNA
