He was tied upside down and repeatedly plunged into water. That was the torture scene Derrick Monasterio taped at a bar, which unsurprisingly is his most challenging and physically difficult task for the camera to date.
Another gripping turn of events in the high-flying series, “Mulawin versus Ravena,” the story line presents Joko Diaz—who plays the role of Antonio—believing that Derrick’s character—Rodrigo—has knowledge about the half-human-half-bird creatures. And so, to extract information from Rodrigo about the Mulawins, Antonio tortures him.
“The scene was harder than I thought it would be,” admitted Derrick. “It was not easy holding my breath in the water. Iba pag nakabitin ka ng patiwarik at inilulubog ka sa tubig. I swallowed a lot of water. The scene was so real that I almost fainted. But I’m so thankful that the team, the staff and the he crew who were there keeping their eyes on me. Every time they noticed that my face was so red, itatayo na nila ko. Sa totoo lang, I felt so weak after.”
Before the scene was taken, the production told Derrick they would use a double for him since they knew how difficult it would be. But Derrick insisted that to do it himself.
“I decided to do it because I want to learn. Kailan pa ako gagawa ng mga ganitong eksena? The opportunity was there and I had to face the challenge. Besides, if I allow a double, pag pumalpak siya, it will still reflect on me.”
One thing is for sure though, and that is Derrick’s transformation happening soon in the series. From being an ordinary man in Rodrigo, he will turn into the courageous and formidable leader and savior of Avila, the kingdom of the Mulawin, as Almiro.
The transformation is something else. That, everyone has to see. It will be a really glorious moment. We haven’t taped it yet but I’ve read the script already and got so excited. I don’t know how to describe it, I can’t find the right words. The viewers will surely get carried away by that transformation moment–iba siya talaga,” Derrick promised.
The Kapuso actor is so focused on Mulawin that on days when he doesn’t have tapings, he spends it in the gym. He said he wants to be ready all the time because his role is physically demanding. As much as possible, he doesn’t want to accept other projects might distract him Mulawin.
Last weekend, however, he temporarily shifted his attention to something he considers equally challenging–hosting. He emceed 2017 Miss Global Philippines with Luanne Dy.
“I accepted the offer because hosting is something I consider foreign territory, which I also want to explore. This is the second year that I hosted the pageant and so far, I’m happy with the feedback I am getting. I hope this hosting stint leads to more hosting jobs for me,” Derrick ended.
