Design Philippines returns to Paris


AS THE branding program of Citem, Design Philippines continues to make its stamp in the international market to promote Filipino design ingenuity.

In September, Design Philippines returned to Paris to engage with foreign artisans and designers and to unveil new expressions of world-class home designs. The Filipino design brands brought by Design Philippines showcase locally crafted unique designs but at the same time embody world-class craft excellence.

In the Paris edition of Maison & Objet last month, Design Philippines presented a collection of 12 unique Philippine brands. The country’s top design brands that have made an impact in the international scene included in the team are Kenneth Cobonpue, Hive, Schema, Industria, and Triboa Bay Living.

Emerging Philippine brands who exhibited at the event includes Lightworks, Padua, Zacarias | S.C. Vizcarra, with the special participation of Asia Ceramics, Domicillo by Peter & Paul, Miguel Aguas for MCCA, and TADECO Home.

“Working side by side with master craftsmen, designers challenge convention by exploring new materials, exaggerating forms, and fusing processes. It is a collaboration seeking the balance between old and new, between intuition and reason,” Gaetos said.

“The result is an inspired collection of Design Philippines that bridges generations and yet brings a light, fresh breeze from a distant design shore,” she declared.

A true testament Filipino craftsmanship, world-renowned local home designer Kenneth Cobonpue won the Asia’s Designer of the Year award of Maison & Objet. The Cebu-based designer presented his new collections of whimsical forms achieved from diverse materials and techniques such as hand-sculpted iron, joined rattan poles, and hand-bended metal sheets.

Bringing worldwide attention to Filipino designs that comes from its unique 7,107 islands, Manila FAME still continues to promote local fashion and lifestyle products to bring income and livelihood nationwide.

“Ultimately, Citem strives to generate a pool of market-ready manufacturers that create innovative and market-driven products made from locally sourced raw materials in order to bring livelihood to their local communities,” Gaetos concluded.
