Detained senators breached rules – PNP

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said an internal investigation conducted by the Headquarters Support Service (HSS) has found some irregularities in the handling of high-profile detainees of the PNP Custodial Center.

Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr., PNP spokesman, said these irregularities surfaced during the visit of detained Senators Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla and Jose ‘Jinggoy’ Estrada to the special ward of the PNP General Hospital on February 14.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile has been under hospital arrest at the PNP General Hospital since his surrender last year. He is facing plunder and graft charges in connection with the multi-billion pesos pork barrel scam.

Cerbo said an initial investigation showed that Revilla and Estrada were taken to the PNP General Hospital by their custodians purportedly to undergo urgent medical check-up.

Instead of going to the Emergency Ward, however, the senators went straight to the special ward, which was about 85 meters farther inside the hospital compound, the PNP spokesman said.

The spokesman added that to preclude any undue influence on the ongoing investigation, the Director of the PNP-HSS, Chief Supt. Alberto Supapo, was relieved from his post.

Cerbo said the PNP will “submit to the wisdom and best judgment” of the Sandiganbayan to determine what action is necessary on the continued detention of the senators under the PNP custody.

“If at all there were any violations of the conditions for detention committed by any of the detained senators, it is up to the Sandiganbayan to determine,” the PNP spokesman said in a statement.
“For our part, we will provide the court with all the necessary documents, information and facts surrounding the activities of the detained senators while under the PNP custody,” he added.
