• Diaz snags gold medal, P1.5M reward from House

HIDILYN Diaz went home richer by P1.5 million on Wednesday after the House of Representatives feted her for winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics.

The weightlifter also received a gold plated Congressional Medal of Distinction for breaking the country’s 10-year medal drought in the Olympic Games.

Diaz, who pulled off the stunning silver medal finish with 200 kg aggregate points with the flawless execution of lifting 112 kg in the second round of competition, also received a copy of House Resolution 175 honoring her.

“This achievement of Hidilyn Diaz affords great pride and honor to the country as it strives to produce better athletes out to conquer the world circuit,” the House Resolution read.

The P1.5 million was sourced from the salaries of the members of the House of Representatives.

The Congressional Medal of Distinction has previously been awarded to another sports icon, former Sarangani Rep. and eight-time world boxing champion Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao who received such distinction twice.

1-Pacman party-list Rep. Mikee Romero earlier called on the government to double Diaz’s P5 million cash reward.

“We have every reason to believe that Pagcor and the government will double the prizes for medal finishers in international sporting events. Hidilyn has renewed our hopes for greatness in sports,” Romero said in a statement.
