Former world champion Nate Diaz forced Irish Conor McGregor into submission in the second round via rear-naked choke in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 196 on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
McGregor, who dropped to 19-3 win-loss record, had an impressive performance in the early part of their match up, when he connected a series of blows on the face of Diaz.
But the 30-year-old American Diaz countered a takedown from McGregor before forcing him with a rear naked choke that lasted 4:12 of second round improving his win-loss record to 20-10.
Before their fight, McGregor was coming off an impressive first round technical knockout win over Jose Aldo last December 12 in UFC 194, while Diaz came from a unanimous win over Michael Johnson last December 17 in UFC Fox 17.
Miesha Tate, meanwhile, dethroned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm by locking her up with a rear-naked choke in the fifth round with still 3:30 left to become the new champion and establish a fifth straight triumph.
She improved her record to 18-5.
Holm, who scored an impressive second round knockout of Ronda Rousey last November, dropped to 10-1 win-loss record.
