GMA Artist Center’s Alden Richards, dubbed as the network’s “Prince of Prime Time,” marked his 23rd birthday by taking part in a build-a-home project in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that aims to build comfortable homes and create a sustainable community for the underprivileged.

On January 12, Alden went to Habitat’s adopted community in Quezon City and expected to take part in the construction of houses. However, he was assigned to clear out the debris from the site that hindered the walkway of the people.

“Sabi ko nga sa isang speaker namin, parang nabitin ako kasi yung ginawa kong task—simple lang eh. Yung debris ililipat lang from Area A to Area B,” Alden explained.

When he quickly finished his assignment, he happily asked to help build the houses again and was welcomed to do so.

“Nakakatuwa yung sabi nung speaker. It hit me; she made a point that it’s not how, o kung gaano kalaki yung tinrabaho mo, kung gaano kahirap, kung gaano ka napagod. What’s important is kung anong nagawa mo. You made a difference, you helped in your way, na kahit papano kung hindi ka tumulong malamang marami pang debris doon sa site na ‘yon na dinadaanan ng tao. So in a way, sabi ko, tama nga naman. It’s the effort that you gave, and not how hard the task is that matters,” the actor continued.

Alden’s actual birthday is on January 2, which went on for him like any ordinary day. He went to the gym, had a quick lunch with friends and had dinner with his family. He had no grand plans for his birthday because he had prepared for a different kind of celebration.

“The moment I woke up nung January 2, parang sobrang positive lang. I was filled with positivity na hindi ko alam kung saan nanggagaling. Siguro it’s because I’m content with my life, and I’m very much happy with everything that’s happening.

This, for me, is the most positive birthday for the past few years,” Alden revealed.

Given many blessings the past year, the actor felt the most appropriate way to celebrate was in giving back, thus his stint with Habitat for Humanity.

On January 24, Alden flew to the Netherlands with Superstar Nora Aunor where their short film Kinabukasan (Adolf Alix) was invited for screening at the prestigious Rotterdam International Film Festival. This is the actor’s first time to travel to Europe, and is excited to take selfies in their weeklong sojourn.
