DILG serves Rama’s suspension order

THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday morning served the suspension order on Cebu City Mayor Michael L. Rama as ordered by Malacañang.

Appointed to take over as city mayor in acting capacity is Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella, DILG Regional Office 7 Director Rene K. Burdeos said.

The 60-day preventive suspension order dated December 2, 2015 is in connection with Rama’s alleged culpable violation of the constitution, grave abuse of authority, grave misconduct and oppression.

Rama just returned from Paris, France where he attended the Climate Change Summit and still officially on leave when the order was served.

His suspension by Malacanang stemmed from a complaint of barangay chairman Victor Buendia for grave abuse of authority, grave misconduct and oppression following his order to demolish a center island with street lighting project on Katipunan Street, Barangay Labangon, Cebu City, October last year.

The mayor allegedly said that a center island is not appropriate for the road after his inspection of the project.

But Buendia said the P300,000 project was approved by Rama himself.

Rama is also facing administrative case before the Office of the President in relation to the P20,000 calamity aid he gave to some 4,200 Cebu officials and employees in December 2014.

He is running under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) party against former Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña of Bando Osmena Pundok Kauswagan.
