Diplomacy will go to the dogs under Duterte

28

ALL hopes for sound diplomatic policies should Rodrigo Duterte become President were dashed to pieces with his latest rants, this time against tried and tested friends Australia and the United States.

Duterte bared his utter inability to think clearly when criticized by threatening to  cut diplomatic ties with Australia and the US – all because their envoys had expressed dismay, coaxed in diplomatic words, at his tasteless and shameful comments on the rape of an Australian missionary.

With his unbending belief in his own righteousness, Duterte couldn’t accept any criticism of his acts and pronouncements. Shades of BS Aquino The Last! Oh, I take that back. Duterte might even be a worse version of the present Malacañang tenant.

Now, we may expect PH diplomatic relations to be determined by Duterte’s emotions, however irrational they may be. Once his blood pressure hits the roof, he becomes incapable of making sound decisions. In a moment of pique, he’ll forget all previous assistance willingly given by a foreign country during our time of need. It no longer matters to him that the Philippines can’t exist in isolation and the country might still need continuing alliances with proven friends. What matters to him is what he has said, and to hell with the unbelievers.

What will become of the Philippines once it’s isolated diplomatically from the US and Australia?  Is it his intention to be closer with China instead? For sure, the PH can remain friends with China despite territorial disputes, but why threaten to cut ties with other friendly countries? With the intemperate language of Duterte, he’s apt to insult more foreign diplomats should he become President.

His party, the PDP- Laban, correctly concluded that his comment on being first in the gang-rape of Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill could pull him down. Thus, it tried some damage control by apologizing in his behalf through a press statement
Alas, Duterte disowned this apology as he saw nothing wrong in what he had said. Doesn’t Duterte ever listen to well-meaning friends who want to point out errors in his ways? What kind of administration will he lead if he’ll remain deaf and blind to contrary views and constructive opposition? Ah, but he might be killing them all while his believers cheer him on!

The PDP-Laban used to pride itself as a party with ideology. I see nothing ideological in its choice of Duterte as official presidential candidate. It tried to put some sense in Duterte’s campaign but got humiliated by his rejection. The PDP-Laban can still salvage what remains of its credibility by disowning Duterte as official party candidate.

The mention of PDP-Laban reminds me of this anecdote. The late Sen. Blas Ople was walking along a Chinese restaurant at the Century Park Sheraton Hotel when he saw Nene Pimentel, Teddyboy Locsin and Jejomar Binay seated at a table.

“It looks like the PDP-Laban is holding a national convention,” Ka Blas quipped.
Now, the PDP-Laban wants to become again a party to reckon with. Well, it will go down with Duterte unless it dumps him fast.

  1. Ronald Tan, Butay Nilo, Ed etc. Australia and U.S are not interferring with Philippine ekections; their Ambassadors just diplomatically expressed their adverse opinions on the sick joke of a presudential aspirant. Gets nyo?
One more thing, digong daid “Huwag na nating ipilit na sa atin ang West Philippine Sea.” can only mean that he is giving up our sovereignty over the islands there. But I bet hindi nyo na gets ito.
Kasi you refuse all sound reasoning like those who were fooled by the author of “Mein Kampf”.

  2. Yeah. The type of diplomacy which cost us the spratlys, the diplomacy which forever relegated us as the underling of the US and other wealthy countries. Is this what you mean? At least this is what i have grown up with.

  4. Mr. Danao is so right about Duterte. Davao is not crime free, and not all people in Davao City love Duterte. Police records are clear that Davao is at the top five in terms of crime crate all over the country: the number of homicide cases in the city totaled 245 from 2010 to 2015. The number of rape incidents in the same period hit 843, while murder incidents reached 1,302. Worse, the CRIME SOLUTION EFFICIENCY RATE based on police records is way below 50%. Twenty two years in power in Davao City, yes 22 very, very long years, and that’s all he could show for it? What a waste of government funds, personnel, logistics support, etc. Oh, and by the way, include in the list of murder incidents 3 radio commentators whose “crime” was to exercise their freedom of speech by merely criticizing Duterte’s handling of city affairs, particularly financial affairs. After they died violently, no one in Davao dared to express ideas that might offend the Mayor or else…. We know because we are from Davao. The kind of peace that persists here is not real peace, but the peace of the graveyard, peace borne out of terrible fear.

  6. First of all, the envoy comment was unconstitutional. They should stay watchful bystander. If they comment something bad on one particular candidate, they are indirectly promoting the others.
Second, Duterte said something like this: “if I become President, if they (Envoy) have problem with me, go ahead and severe it (Diplomatic ties)” . Is Duterte saying that “HE” will cut it? there is a big diff between “you” and “I”, I am surprise that most of the Author (MEDIA) regarding this issue is bad in listening or has poor reading comprehension.

  7. Currently Duterte is already showing signs of irrational behaviors , what more if Power is given to this kind of person? This is a very dangerous man . He has a dangerous mouth and mind.

  8. Critize USA and Australia is fine – but next time a Yolanda a hits Mindanao who will be the first to put up financial aid and help – US and Australia.

  9. Please just be objective with the journalist’s pen… Duterte dared the US and Aussie Ambassadors to sever ties if they do not like him as president. Duterte never said he will cut ties.

  10. PDP-Laban is starting to self-destruct, its principles in shambles for committing an error of judgement installing a person that will dissolve its core principles and objective. The party is so quiet with its candidates pronouncements. What now?

  11. C palparan tlaga ang butcher walang yabang pg pumatay n he is proven coz whenever he was assigned there will be bloodshed for the communist. And he dont even boasted of those killings but records will show.

  12. You are terribly wrong mr Danao, the comment of duterte towards the two ambassador shows strenght on Duterte. He didnt say he will cut ties with them as this newspaper was saying, he challenge them to cut ties if ever he will be chosen president. You know what? Dont ever think that diplomacy is all about sweet talking or the work of the weaklings. diplomacy is a work of strong character and decisive diplomat. @ Duterte can do that, and even believe that diplomacy is the best solution in the west philippine sea problem. Locally Duterte has the track record in talking with all the rebels in mindanao be it muslim insurgents or communist npa. No other candidates had that command of respect from the insurgents.

  13. The US diplomat previously said in various interviews that the American government does not condone people who issue statements that “either degrade women or trivialize issues so serious as rape or murder.”

The Manila Times also quoted him in a report expressing his preference to candidates who are keen on continuing the deep alliance of Manila and Washington, saying, “continuity is better than change”.

  14. Section 81 of the Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines:

‘Intervention of foreigners. – It shall be unlawful for any foreigner, whether judicial or natural person, to aid any candidate or political party, directly or indirectly, or take part in or influence in any manner any election, or to contribute or make any expenditure in connection with any election campaign or partisan political activity.”

  15. Know the truth for the sake of our beloved country and the Filipino people!!!!

There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true. – Soren Kierkegaard

Filipino bobotantes had been fooled. They are so naïve and so gullible that they can be easily deceived. Ironically, it is very difficult to convince them that they had been fooled.

It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. – Mark Twain

OUR COUNTRY DOESN’T NEED COMMUNISM AND ITS FALSE PROMISES. WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS JUSTICE FOR ALL. WE MUST VOTE CANDIDATES LIKE GEN. PALPARAN WHO FIGHT AGAINST THE ENEMIES OF STATE LIKE THE COMMUNISTS NPA WHO ARE A SERIOUS THREAT TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY.

NO TO GODLESS COMMUNISTS!!!! NO TO POLITICIANS WHO SUPPORT THE COMMUNISTS!!!!

And here we go again. Duterte who is a confessed leftist and an avid supporter of the communists wants to become the president of our beloved country. Ayaw daw nila sa Marcos Martial law but Duterte wants to declare Martial Law and a revolutionary government. He wants to make a coalition and share power with the communist rebel group.

NO TO GODLESS COMMUNISTS!!! NO TO POLITICIANS WHO SUPPORT THE COMMUNISTS!!!!

The History Reveals How the Communist Government of China Supported the NPA Rebels of this country. The Chinese provided them Weapons to be used in their revolt against the Government of the Philippines. That’s why Pres.Ferdinand Marcos declares Martial Law.

And here we go again. Duterte who is a self-confessed leftist and an avid supporter of the communists wants to become the president of our country. If elected president, he wants to make a coalition and share power with the communist rebel group.

  18. Matagal na tayong inaapi ng communist China. Mahigit 50 years na.

  19. Duterte can sever ties with US and Australia anytime he likes.

Mr.Raffy,pls.don’t post comments when you don’t know the facts, you look like a fool, shut-up your mouth and do the research so that you don’t look like an idiot.

    • Sir I think this time Duterte is right. I lived her in the US. The government here doesn’t wanna help Philippines either or any country for now because We have a lot going on. Sanders and Trump vow to concentrate helping and priority what is the good for the citizens in the US . Australian on the other side, hoping that the next president of the Philippines will continue the mining that will benefit them. This time I am with Duterte. Filipinos cannot rely to any country. Trump look us as opportunist not a friend.

  20. Duterte has a very big mental problem but majority of the voters cannot see the dysfunctional person. This is the perfect example of the blind leading the blind.

    • john sanchez on

I think you are the one who has a mental problem, because you don’t say anything about Binay,or Mar or Poe. Of what they are. Why single out Duterte.

  21. pedro somoroy on

i am sorry mr danao but i dont feel the help of the americans and the australians. dont forget what they did to the negro slaves and the aborigines. dont forget the laurel-langley agreement. dont forget the dominicans for the inquisition. duterte should be canonized a saint. he maybe sporting a halo supported by horns, but he is one of us. we are many and we will help him become a good president. together we will make this country great.

  22. Bobo ng Writer na ito. Duterte DARED the US and Aussie Ambassadors to sever ties if they do not like him as president. Duterte NEVER said he will cut ties.

It is Election period and it is against the LAW for any foreign entity to meddle. Itong Writer na ito, hindi nagreresearch. WAG KANG UMASA SA OLIGARCH MEDIA NA TINITWIST ANG WORDS NI DIGONG. Anong klaseng Journalist ito???

    • john sanchez on

Yes I agree with Ronald Tan, how this writer was allowed by Manila Times to post this topic when he was 100% wrong, first of all,Duterte don’t say that he will cut ties with U.S. and Australia. How this is tolerated by the Manila Times? don’t they have a proof reader? Looks like they consfire with the writer.
