• Diplomats told: Stay apolitical or face penalties

Citing reports that some members of Foreign Service Corps may be engaging in partisan political activities, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has warned Filipino diplomats of severe penalties if they are found guilty of electioneering.

In an “extremely urgent” memorandum issued on April 12, DFA-Overseas Voting
Secretariat (OVS) Chairman Undersecretary Rafael Seguis attached copies of a letter from the Commission on Elections (Comelec), a joint circular from Comelec and the Commission on Civil Service (CSC), and a CSC resolution forming the basis of the notice.

“All posts are hereby reminded that all DFA officers, personnel and those who are deputized to discharge the duties of various electoral boards for overseas voting to remain apolitical and refrain from electioneering activities,” read part of the memo.

Those who violate the order may face suspension from one day to six months or dismissal from service.

The warning comes amid the ongoing overseas absentee voting (OAV) for 1.3 million overseas Filipino voters (OFVs).

The voting period abroad, which started on April 9, will run until May 9.
