• Dismayed Tom Jones fans to get ticket refunds

Filipino fans were dismayed Saturday night when music icon Tom Jones’ concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum was cancelled two hours before show time.

A statement emailed by Ovation Productions to The Manila Times explained the reason behind the singer’s decision: “Due to serious illness in his immediate family, Tom Jones has regretfully had to cancel his performance in Manila this evening. He extends his deepest apologies to both the organizers and the fans, who he is most sad to disappoint. There are no further details at this time.”

The statement went on to reassure ticket holders that payments will be refunded. “For tickets purchased at Ticketnet outlet and box office, refund will be available starting April 5 to May 5 at the Ticketnet office located at the Yellow Gate of Araneta Coliseum.”

On the other hand, online ticket buyers at ticketnet.com.ph will automatically get refunds via  credit cards used for the transactions.

All the same, concertgoers took to the Internet to express their disappointment.

“We had to go through heavy traffic just to get there! Not cool tom! @RealSirTomJones @ovationprod,” wrote @jongvarela on Twitter.

“Ano ba un? 2hrs before the concert na-cancel… Lugi si producer… May penalty kaya si Tom Jones?” commented Twitter user @watchAmak0lme.

On Instagram, ‏@MhieHotieteresa captioned her ticket photo: “Sayang ang ticket sa concert ! NaCancel!”

There were more understanding fans, however, like  ‏@avidlarry who tweeted, “Pumunta kaming Araneta for Tom Jones’ concert at hindi sya umattend dahil may emergency. Sana ok lang sya.”

Jones is the hitmaker of world famous tracks such as “Sex Bomb,” “It’s Not Unusual,” “Kiss,” and “Delilah,” among others. At 75, he is still active in the music industry with concerts and tours.

As it turns out, this is not the first time that the artist had cancelled a concert in Manila. It will be remembered that he did so in 2010 as well when he himself suffered a health concern.
