De La Salle-Lipa and National U hacked out victories in varying fashions to lead the opening day winners of the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League of Champions Season 14 at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig late Friday.
The defending champion DLS-Lipa spikers put on a superb all-around game to frustrate their Ateneo de Davao U rivals, 25-19, 25-18, while the NU side, runner-up in last year’s edition of the annual event sponsored by Shakey’s, needed an extra set to defuse the Holy Family Academy tossers, 25-15, 18-25, 25-19.
Those victories gave the two fancied teams the early lead in Pool A of the two-division finale which gathers the top 10 teams which survived the grueling regional elims of the league backed by MyPhone, Asics and Mikasa and organized by Metro Sports.
Also hurdling their first assignments in the single round competition are Kings’ Montessori School and title favorite University of Santo Tomas.
The KMS squad also underscored its readiness to vie for the coveted crown as it walloped Iligan City National High School 25-12, 25-16, while the España-based team overpowered Central Philippine U, 25-14, 25-17, in Pool B action.
The top two teams from both sides will advance to the crossover semis on Wednesday with the winners clashing for the crown on Thursday. For details, visit www.facebook.com/shakeysgirlsvleague.
