• DLS-Zobel netters dominate PPS-PEPP Southwoods

Gia Sagandoy racked up four titles while Marcus del Rosario annexed three crowns as the De La Salle-Zobel bets stamped their class in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala Manila Southwoods leg regional age-group 2016 at the Manila Southwoods Sports Club in Carmona, Cavite recently.

The unranked Sagandoy, 14, upended top seed Camille So, 6-3, 7-5, in the semis then trounced Mia So, 6-3, 6-3, to snare the girls’ 18-and-under crown. She also scored a 1-0 (ret.) win over No. 1 Gab Zoleta in the semis then whipped doubles partner Denise Bernardo, 6-0, 6-1, to run away with the 16-U plum.

She and Bernardo later beat Julai Ignacio and Patricia Uy, 8-4, for the 14-U doubles title with the duo also pulling off an 8-5 win over Megan Reyes and Lila Salvacio in the 18-U doubles finals of the top-ranking tournament sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop and presented by Slazenger.

Del Rosario, on the other hand, wore down Lourenco de Almeida in a thrilling three-setter, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-6, to capture the boys’ 18-U crown. He also crushed Matthew Garcia, 6-3, 6-2, in the 16-U finals of the weeklong event hosted by Southwoods for the first time, sanctioned by Philta and backed by Asiatraders Corp., exclusively distributor of Slazenger.

The DLS-Zobel mainstay later combined with Jose Angelo Aparte to subdue Leyton Portin and Eldyzar Alvarico, 8-3, for the 18-U doubles plum.

“We thank Manila Southwoods for supporting our junior and grassroots tennis program which is a big boost to the sport and to Carmona, Cavite as well,” said Palawan Pawnshop president/CEO Bobby Castro. “While the DLS-Z aces proved dominant, the event also produced a number of new faces, including Michael Fuentes.”

Zoleta, from Bristol Integrated School of Lucena City, took the girls’ 14-U title with a 6-3, 6-3 romp over Bernardo, while schoolmate Julia Ignacio clipped Marielle Jarata, 7-5, 6-1, to pocket the 12-U diadem.

The No. 8 Fuentes, from Cainta, Rizal, stunned No. 2 Eduardo Angara, 7-5, 6-2, in the quarters, booted out No. 3 Martin Buenaventura, 6-1, 6-3, in the semis then overpowered top seed Andrei Jarata, 6-1, 6-2, to capture the boys’ 14-U title with Jarata, from Agoo, La Union, rebounding to claim the 12-U crown with a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Luis Salvacion.

Second seed Patrick Salvacion, also from Bristol IS, clinched the 10-unisex plum with a 4-2, 4-0 victory over Athan Geluz while other doubles winners were Mariel Jarata-Patrick Salvacion, who edged Kidlat Estogero and Kean Enriquez, 8-6, for the 10-U title; and Angelo Mates-Tristan Japay, who nipped JT Bernardo-Andrei Jarata, 8-7(5).
