DOJ to lead other govt agencies to probe number of ‘Yolanda’ victims

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima will meet with officials of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) for the conduct of the investigation into the number of those killed by super typhoon “Yolanda” last November 8.

The investigation will be conducted by the DOJ and DOST in line with the directive of President Benigno Aquino 3rd who would like to know reason behind the high death toll in Tacloban City and other parts of Leyte province.

According to de Lima, she will meet with the officials of the two agencies on Wednesday to tackle the mechanics of the investigation.

Although it was known beforehand that “Yolanda” was a super typhoon, de Lima said that the President would like to know the reason behind the high number of casualties.

De Lima added that they would determine the inefficiencies or the things that should have been done to avoid loss of lives. PNA

  1. Before the investigation, it might be wise for the administration to let the public know what Mar Roxas and Gazmin’s report to the president while they were there visiting Tacloban, if not to investigate whether the local government followed the safety guidelines issued by the national government to prepare for Yolanda. The two left Tacloban before Yolanda struck, even if they found deficiency, it could be already too late to do anything. Their findings could be the basis for the investigation. We will wait and see.
