Donaire braces against African WBA championFebruary 8, 2014 10:19 pm
FORMER World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is preparing to fight South African World Boxing Association featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka some time in April or May.
The bout will most likely be held in Cotai Arena in Venetian Hotel Macau, China.
Donaire, carrying a 32-2 win-loss record with 21 knockouts, is coming off from a ninth round technical knockout win over Australian southpaw Vic Darchinyan in their recent rematch.
Top Rank Promotion head Bob Arum is scheduled to meet with representatives of Venetian Hotel to discuss the bout, according to philboxing.com.
Vetyetka, 33, who holds a 26-2 win-loss slate with 16 knockouts, snatched the WBA belt from long time world champion Chris John of Indonesia via shocking sixth round technical knockout in their match in Australia.
The bout against Vetyeka is crucial for Donaire who aims to return to the top after his lost to Cuban slugger Guillermo Rigondeaux.
A victory over the South African would mean Donaire could arrange a rematch with Rigondeaux.
