World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. has hired Cuban Ismael Salas as his trainer for his upcoming November 5 fight against Jessie Magdaleno according to Top Rank Promotion head Bob Arum.
“Nonito has hired veteran Cuban trainer Salas,” Arum told The Manila Times.
Arum though refused to comment if Salas is the official replacement for Nonito Sr. who quit as his son’s trainer last month.
Arum believes that the technical aspects of Donaire’s boxing skills would improve under Salas.
“Salas is a national trainer of Cuban boxing team and he is really a good trainer. He trained a lot of great boxers,” said Arum. “Nonito will benefit with Salas. Nonito is a tough competitor in the international stage and Salas can transform him to a much better fighter.”
Among the boxers that Salas trained are former WBO and World Boxing Association world bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Danny Green, Jorge Linares as well as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent Jessie Vargas.
