Nonito Donaire Jr.’s title defense against Zsolt Bedak is headed for the home of some of the most ravenous boxing fans – Cebu City.
“First we thought Araneta but Cebu deserves it,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said of the huge boxing event that they will co-promote with Bob Arum’s Top Rank.
Donaire was supposed to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight strap against Bedak on April 23 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City but Aldeguer decided to move it to the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) on the same date.
“We had a successful event there in 2007 between [Z] Gorres and [Fernando] Montiel. Cebu is the boxing Mecca of the Philippines and we also take pride in being a Cebu-based promotional company,” said Aldeguer.
Donaire Jr. won the vacant WBO super bantamweight strap with a unanimous decision over Cesar Juarez late last year in Puerto Rico.
This will be his first title defense.
Bedak, a former Olympian, will be making his second attempt at a world title after losing his first title bid for the same belt against then titleholder Wilfredo Vazquez in 2010 in Puerto Rico.
Unbeaten up-and-comer Mark Magsayo is also seeing action in the blockbuster card.
But he has to go through his opponent, Eduardo Montoya, tomorrow night. The same goes with Kevin Jake Cataraja, who is up against Tony Rodriguez this Saturday.
Magsayo may be facing former world title challenger Cris Avalos in one of the main featured fights on April 23.
“In principle, we have agreed with Avalos. We didn’t push it yet because we respect Montoya. We agreed in principle with Avalos’ team but they haven’t signed the contract. We will formalize it after the 27th and hopefully they’ll sign it,” said Aldeguer.
Aldeguer also said that Top Rank will also have one of its fighters fight here and Jason Pagara will also be seeing action in the show.
