DOST sends ‘library in a box’ to poor rural areas

The Department of Science and Technology Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) launched their digital science library in provinces to help students in their science researches and school activities.

This “library in a box,” called Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station (Starbooks), opened in four provinces—Cordillera Administrative Region, Masbate, Negros Oriental and Romblon—a library “which may be accessed even in the absence of internet connection.”

According to Annie Lyn Bacani, administrative coordinator of Starbooks project, DOST-STII chose the four recipients from the National Statistical Coordination Board data of top 20 poorest provinces in the country.

The science kiosk is said to not only serve students, but also entrepreneurs, farmers and other field workers related to agriculture and science.

The library provides research materials in topics more useful for students and workers in provinces such as food and nutrition, health and medicine, emerging technologies, energy, environment, livelihood technologies, investigative projects and theses in different fields.
