THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) regional office in Benguet, Mountain province is ready to make public its studies which confirmed the landslide prone areas as well as places of sink holes within the province, in order that the office can share in risk reduction program in the area.
DOST regional director Julius Cesar Sicat said the studies would serve as early warning to the concerned residents in these areas and would adopt appropriate measures to avert any harm or damage to their properties.
According to Sicat, the landslide prone areas are mostly found in the Benguet towns of Tublay, Mankayan, Buguias, Bokod, and Itogon. Benguet has a total of 13 towns.
According to Sicat, the DOST has noted a sinking area within the sitio Mayomod in Barangay Ambassador, Tublay, Benguet that has already affected some houses in the area.
“When we checked, some houses were already with cracked floorings and walls that we have given precaution to residents to be ready for evacuation if needed. We were however criticized because most of those in that area refuse to leave because they cannot abandon their several vegetable farms from which they derive their income,” Sicat said.
According to Sicat, the DOST can furnish the concerned local government units of their studies in order that the local officials can further improve their risk reduction program.
It must be recalled that the province has now U.S.$ 1.7 million donated by the United States to further improve its disaster preparations and response to prevent casualty. PNA
