THE Department of Tourism (DOT) is positive about hitting the $5.5 billion revenue target from foreign arrivals this year, a DOT official said.
“We will probably hit something pretty close to $5.5 billion,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. told reporters during the 3rd Philippine Tourism Forum, on a theme of “The Business of Tourism: Asean and Beyond” on Thursday.
The July figures show the first time in Philippine history foreign visitor arrivals hit 498,000.
“It’s accelerating faster than we expected,” he said.
In 2014, the tourism industry employed 4.758 million or 12.5 percent of the total employment. The industry target in terms of employment this year is 6.3 million and 7.4 million for 2016.
Jimenez said the share of Tourism to gross domestic product (GDP) was 7.8 percent last year, the same as programmed for 2015. The target for next year is 8.7 percent of the GDP.
