The Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat team will test its prowess against top teams in the region in the 2016 Asian Dragon Boat Championships and the International Club Crew Championship (ICCC) starting today in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Top Asian teams including Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, and India will attend the two-day international tournament.
“Everything is all set for our first-ever hosting of the two-in-one championships. This is a huge event and we want to showcase our prowess when it comes to this sport,” said Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation assistant coach Duchess Co in a phone interview on Thursday.
Co said this is also an opportunity to promote Palawan as one of the prime tourist destinations in the country.
The PCKDF team will see action in the men’s 20-seater 500-meter and 200m event as well as the junior mixed 10-seater category.
Meanwhile, 33 teams from Asia, Germany and the United States will participate in the 12 events of the ICCC.
Among the local teams competing are Sagwan Tanauan of Batangas, Team Kugtong of Davao, Manila Dragons, De La Salle University, Team Bacunawa, University of the Philippines, Speed Devils, and Team Puerto Prinsesa.
After the Asian championships, the Filipino team will be preparing for the Southeast Asian Dragon Boat Championships next year since the sport is not included in the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.
