Drug toll hits 395

THE number of drug suspects killed in intensified police operations against illegal drugs since July 1, 2016 has reached 395, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

Figures released by the PNP Public Information Office (PIO) on Monday showed that 395 drugs suspects were killed, 5, 251 were arrested and 545, 589 surrendered.

Among those killed was Meco Tan, a big-time Chinese drug lord who used to operate a shabu laboratory in Naic, Cavite. Tan was gunned down by a police team out to arrest him on July 22 in Valenzuela City.

A Quezon City police officer was also killed by fellow police officers during a buy-bust on July 26.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa warned that he will reshuffle policemen suspected to be involved directly or indirectly in the illegal drug trade.

“We will relocate and dislocate until they vacate,” dela Rosa said.

He added that deploying crooked policemen to areas far from their usual assignment can be considered “punishment.”

“This should also not be given a negative impression. There are also many policemen in Mindanao that are also involved in illegal drug trade and they should also be assigned in far away places,” dela Rosa said.

“This is part of our internal cleansing… and there will be more reshuffling of policemen to take place nationwide,” he warned.
