The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has apprehended six supermarkets located in Metro Manila that are selling Noche Buena products higher than the suggested retail price (SRP), as part of its effort to ensure that the supply and prices of Noche Buena items are stable and within the SRP this coming Christmas season.
DTI-Consumer Welfare and Business Regulation Group (CWBRG) Officer-in-Charge Lawyer Victorio Mario A. Dimagiba reported that six supermarkets located at Quezon City, Manila, Makati City, and Taguig City were found selling Noche Buena products above the suggested retail price.
The six supermarkets apprehended are: Metro Supermarket , Taguig City; Walter Mart Supermarket, E. Rodriguez Ave. Quezon City; Mightee Mart, Sta Cruz, Manila; Shopwise, Pasong Tamo, Makati City; Cash and Carry, Makati City; and Puregold Delpan, Makati City.
“These establishments were found selling their Noche Buena items P1.20 to P6.65 higher than our SRP. We issued them Show Cause Orders [SCO] to explain such increase on their products,” Dimagiba said.
The items which were discovered higher than the SRP include mayonnaise, elbow and salad macaroni, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, condensed and evaporated milk, and sandwich spread.
Last week, DTI also conducted a price monitoring activity and found three establishments in Quezon City selling Noche Buena products 2 percent to 10 percent higher than the SRP.
“We are urging the retailers to comply with the SRP and avoid overpricing their Noche Buena items. Please always check the SRP list of our products,” Dimagiba said.
He also advised consumers to report establishments that sell products above the suggested retail price.
“Make sure that the item or shelf price is the same with the price at the cashier, and carefully check and compare the weights of competing brands.” Dimagiba advised.
