DUMAGUETE CITY: Preparations for the up and coming 21st season of the University Games (UNIGAMES) is at its peak to be hosted this year by the City of Dumaguete, Negros Oriental.
Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo says that his city is fortunate to host the UNIGAMES this year, the fifth so far in Dumaguete with the first three hosted by Foundation University in 2000,2002 and 2008, Silliman University in 2010 and this year.
He was mayor of Dumaguete in 2001.
With his comeback as mayor, Remollo has offered to host the UNIGAMES every year until his term ends as a manifestation of support, hospitability and the love of sports by Dumagueteños.
If things go right for us, Dumaguete City will be hosting the UNIGAMES on a yearly basis and assured the organizers it will improve and further upgrade the facilities in cooperation with the provincial government, Remollo said.
There are ten events during the UNIGAMES this year, namely, basketball for men and women, beach volleyball, table tennis for men and women, athletics, football, taekwondo, chess and badminton. Sepak takraw will not be included this year because of lack of participating teams.
To date, 38 schools have confirmed their participation in the UNIGAMES.
The last to confirm is the Negros Oriental State University in Dumaguete City.
Collegiate schools affected by the K to 12 Program have to field athletes in the individual and dual sports.
Most delegations will be arriving in Dumaguete from October 22 to 23.
Meanwhile, the technical meeting for all coaches, tournament managers and officiating officials was set on October 24.
