President Rodrigo Duterte was “overjoyed” by the silver medal win of his fellow Mindanaoan, Hidilyn Diaz, in the ongoing Rio Olympics.
In a news conference in Davao City early Tuesday, Duterte thanked Diaz for the honor she gave the country.
“I am happy that she was encouraged by my words,” Duterte said, adding that not everybody is given the chance and honor to represent the Philippines in the Olmpics.
“The fact that you are selected to represent, it’s not in the winning, that’s in your drive to strive to win. As the President of this country, I’m overjoyed. Silver is silver, whatever people may say,” he said.
The President also invited Diaz to the Malacañang Palace so he can personally thank her.
“I’m so proud of you. I’d like to wait for you and see you in the people’s Palace in Malacañang. Thank you for your effort. I salute you,” Duterte said.
