President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday made a turnaround and offered Vice President Leni Robredo a post in his Cabinet.
Yesterday, the President called Robredo and asked Robredo to head the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC). The post was previously held by former Vice President Jejomar Binay.
The announcement was made by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre.
“The President asked the Vice President if she would accept the Cabinet position of the HUDCC. The Vice President has accepted the offer and she was asked to report for the first Cabinet meeting on Monday,” Aguirre said.
“I believe that both parties are happy with the decision. And we could feel that many among the present Cabinet members are also happy with the fact that, at last, the Vice President is no longer an officer without any Cabinet post but is now a full pledged Cabinet member,” he added.
Asked what triggered Duterte’s change of heart, Aguirre said recent events led to a “warming up between the two.”
“The past meeting between the two was very amiable. I believe that was the key for the President to offer her a position,” he added.
Duterte earlier said he would not give Robredo a Cabinet post so as not to hurt the feelings of his longtime friend, Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Robredo won against Marcos by more than 200,000 votes
The Vice President thanked Duterte for his offer.
“Nagpapasalamat tayo kay Presidente Rodrigo Duterte na itinalaga tayo bilang tagapangulo ng HUDCC. Mas mapaglilingkuran natin ang ating mga kababayang walang tahanan at maipagpapatuloy natin ang ating pangakong itulak ang kaunlaran at kaginhawaan para sa ating mga kapuspalad na kababayan (I thank President Rodrigo Duterte for appointing me as head of the HUDCC. Now I can better serve the poor who have no homes and I can better fulfill my promise to help our poor countrymen),” Robredo said in a statement.
