President Rodrigo Duterte has directed all the concerned government agencies to ensure the success of the 19th edition of the Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship, which will be held from August 9 to 17 in Laguna.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea issued Memorandum Circular No. 20, directing all government agencies, and instrumentalities, and encouraging local government units to support the hosting of the volleyball tournament, in coordination with the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc.
“The hosting of said sporting event in the Philippines will bring international prestige, publicity, goodwill, and economic benefits to the country,” Duterte said in his order.
“All government agencies, and instrumentalities, including government-owned or -controlled corporations, are hereby directed, and all local government units are encouraged, to extend full support to the 19th edition of the Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship 2017,” he added.
Peter Cayco, Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. president, earlier said a total of 14 countries will compete in the tournament sanctioned by the Asian Volleyball Confederation.
The Philippines, which will be spearheaded by Mika Reyes of Petron, is in Pool A, along with Kazakhstan and Hong Kong, while Rio Olympics champion China, powerhouse Japan and Australian are in Pool B.
In Pool C are South Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, while Chinese Taipei, Iran and Maldives are in Pool D. CATHERINE VALENTE
