• Duterte reaches out to son

DAVAO CITY: Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has assured his son, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, that he can run for mayor if his daughter, former mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio, will not seek the same post.

The mayor issued the statement on Thursday, in reaction to the resignation of his son from his party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, a decision that apparently underscored the strained political relationship within the Duterte family.

Mayor Duterte has been very vocal about his invitation for Inday Sara to run as mayor again, saying he is out of politics in 2016.

“If I decide to retire in 2016, and Inday has consistently refused to run again, then it could be his game,” Mayor Duterte said.

And if Inday Sara runs, the mayor said his son should stay awhile as vice mayor.

“If Inday does not, and she is consistent about that, then the next logical candidate would be Paolo,” Duterte said.

Vice Mayor Duterte’s resignation letter dated September 23 stemmed from his feeling that he was “unappreciated” by his father and the party.

Mayor Duterte, meanwhile, admitted that he and his son are yet to talk about this. But he said the vice mayor must have “misconstrued” his statements.

“He misconstrued that I was declaring his position open for others to vie for,” he added.

And asked about his concrete plans for the vice mayor, Duterte said: “I do not plan other people’s political career, even if it’s my son’s.”
