President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday warned that he is ready to fire more government officials “anytime” over corruption allegations.
“Lahat ng appointed ko, kaya kong paalisin anytime [All those officials I appointed, I can have them removed anytime],” Duterte said in his speech during the celebration of Phoenix Petroleum’s 10th stock market listing anniversary in Makati City.
“But for elected officials, hanggang supervision lang ako [my job is limited to supervision],” he added.
Duterte said he had fired a Cabinet official for lying to him. He was apparently referring to former interior secretary Ismael Sueno, whom he sacked over the alleged anomalous acquisition of fire trucks.
He then asked businessmen not to bribe or enter into shady deals with the government.
“Pag may konting kalokohan [if it is questionable]do not enter into it,” Duterte said.
“What put us down throughout the years is corruption in government. I hope I can eliminate or at least minimize corruption,” he added.
The President earlier fired his own campaign spokesman from his post as National Irrigation Administration chief also over alleged corruption.
He also sacked two of his fraternity brothers from their posts in the Bureau of Immigration.
Duterte earlier dismissed 92 government employees from the Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Internal Revenue and regulatory board members of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board due to alleged irregularities.
