President Rodrigo Duterte skipped the meeting between member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Vientiane, Laos on Wednesday.
The President was represented by Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr.
According to Malacañang, Duterte had a scheduled meeting with the president of Laos, Bounnhang Vorachith.
“Per protocol, PRRD [Duterte] has a 7pm courtesy call with the Laos President,” the Palace said.
It was earlier reported that Duterte, who has railed against the UN for criticizing his government, had declined a request to meet Ban.
Duterte launched tirades against the world body after UN special rapporteurs criticized his crackdown on illegal drugs, even threatening to pull out of the UN, a threat he later withdrew.
