EAC battles Arellano, aims to stretch winning run

EMILIO Aguinaldo College Generals seek for ninth and fourth straight victory when they battle Arellano University Chiefs while Letran tries to strengthen its hold of the second spot today in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Generals, fresh from their 85-83 win over host College of Saint Benilde Blazers on Thursday, will collide against the Chiefs at 4 p.m. in a game very crucial to their quest of making it to the Final Four for the first time since joining the league as a guest team in 2009.

Letran, carrying an 11-3 win-loss slate, faces the Blazers at 6 p.m. The secondary matches pit the EAC Brigadiers against Arellano Braves at 12 p.m. and the Letran Squires against CSB-LGHS Greenies at 2 p.m.

The Blazers and the Chiefs are tied in the seventh to 8th positions with identical 5-9 cards and a loss by any of them today would end their quest for a Final Four slot.

EAC coach Gerry Esplana will again lean on John Tayongtong, the hero in their victory over the Blazers. The sophomore Tayongtong of Cagayan de Oro City, scored the winning drive with only 1.2 seconds remaining to prove their mastery over the Taft Ave.-based CSB, whom they also defeated 73-72 in the first round of the elimination on July 4.

Coach Caloy Garcia of the Letran Knights warned his wards of complacency, reminding them that they only won by a lone point over the Blazers (61-60) in their first meeting on July 13.
