EMILIO Aguinaldo College Generals leaned on six players to notch double figures in beating the College of Saint Benilde Blazers, 81-72, on Wednesday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
John Tayongtong, Jack Ar–quero, Jan Jamon, Ariel Aguilar, Cedric Noube Happi and Jerald Serrano combined for 77 points to put the Generals in an early leading position with the San Beda Red Lions, San Sebastian College Stags and Arellano Chiefs at the top of the standings all bearing similar 1-0 slates.
“Every season is a new opportunity for us to make the Final Four. Aguilar is a nice fit for us in the backcourt while Serrano is a good stretch because he can really hit those outside shots,” said EAC coach Gerry Esplana.
Tayongtong and Arquero both finished with 14 points apiece while Jamon and Aguilar posted 13 each. Happi contributed 12 and Serrano 11 as they blasted through the Blazers’ defense in the final half with a 66-54 lead.
Coach Gabby Velasco’s Blazers could not cope up with Happi and Taongtong’s run-and-gun rampage and fell by as much as 13 points, 72-59, early in the fourth quarter.
