The Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals trounced the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags, 71-56, to secure their third win in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament elimination round on Monday at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
John Tayongtong, Jack Arquero, Jan Jamon and Cameroonian Cedric Noube Happi combined forces in the pivotal period to pull off the victory that improved their record to 3-6 going into the second round of the elimination.
Tayongtong led the Generals with 16 points on six-of-10 shooting from the field plus three assists the last was on Jerald Saludo, a crucial move that stretched their lead to 15 points with only a few seconds remaining.
The Generals are now sharing the seventh to eighth positions with the Stags that are also carrying a similar 3-6 win-loss slate. The Stags suffered their fourth straight setback after a 3-1 start.
Supporting the Cagayan de Oro City native Tayongtong was Jamon, who finished with 16 points.
Coach Gerry Esplana expressed satisfaction over the Generals’ effort and vowed to improve his wards’ performance in the second round so they can reach the Final Four for the first time.
