• EAC, Perpetual to clash in NCAA volley finals


    Defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta survived their respective Final Four matches to arrange their finals showdown in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 91 men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

    Reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica scored 31 points on 27 attacks, three blocks and an ace to power the Generals to a nerve-wracking 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-9 win over San Beda College.

    Middle hitter Israel Encina chipped in 13 points and Kerth Melliza added 10 while playmaker Nicco Bihag had 22 excellent sets for EAC.

    For its part, Perpetual Help also needed to go through the proverbial eye of the needle before ousting College of Saint Benilde via 33-31, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 15-9 decision in the other Final Four game.

    Rey Taneo Jr. led the Altas with 21 points built on 19 spikes and a couple of blocks while Relan Taneo and Bonjomar Castel delivered 13 apiece in the match that lasted for two hours and 11 minutes.

    National team member John Vic De Guzman paced Benilde with 28 points.

    It will also be an EAC-Perpetual Help finals affair in the juniors division.

    Perpetual Help hurdled past San Sebastian College in the first semifinal game, 25-23, 24-26, 14-25, 25-23, 15-10, before EAC scoring a straight-set 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Arellano University in the other semifinal pairing.
