Defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) blasted University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-22, 14-25, 25-14, 25-16, to take the series opener in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica sizzled with 22 points including four blocks to power the Generals to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three championship series.
“I just played my best to help my team win this game. We were down in the second set but we were able to regroup and bring back the momentum on our side,” said the 22-year-old Mojica.
The Game 2 will be played on Friday at the same venue with the Generals hoping to sweep the Altas and claim their second consecutive crown in the league.
In the juniors division, Perpetual Help posted an easy 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 win over EAC to grab the upper hand in their own best-of-three championship series.
Team captain Jody Margaux Severo scored six attacks; four blocks and an ace while Gabriel Casana added nine markers for the Junior Altas.
“The boys were determined to take this one, they were really focused on winning,” said Perpetual Help coach Sandy Rieta. “We came into the finals to really deny their spikers and double our efforts in scrambling for the ball and the boys succeeded on both.”
