Ateneo de Manila High School (AHS) Blue Eaglets snapped their three-game losing skid at the expense of the University of the East (UE) Junior Warriors, 89-62, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) juniors’ basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City on Saturday.

The UE Junior Warriors took a one-point cushion over Ateneo after 10 minutes of action, 18-19. But the Blue Eaglets limited the Junior Warriors to only four baskets, while scoring 33 points to close the first half in their favor, 51-27.

The red-and-white squad completed a 6-0 run midway through the third frame from the efforts of Andrei Dulalia and Sean Manaug, 61-41. With Amchel Angeles drawing the fifth team foul for Ateneo, Cruzette Gonzales sank both his free throws with 2:56 minutes remaining in the quarter, 62-43.

Ateneo’s Joaquin Manuel drained a three-pointer for Ateneo in the 1:32 minute mark, 66-43. Miguel Santos hit a putback off Samjosef Belangel’s miss to close the third period, 70-45.

The Blue Eaglets completed a 4-0 blitz with Dave Ildefonso’s layup and Belangel’s basket inside the paint to extend their lead to 32 with 7:18 minutes remaining in the match, 79-47.

Daniel Ramos drained a jumper for UE in the 4:01 minute mark, 55-83.

The blue-and-white cagers did not look back and finished off the UE Junior Warriors to clinch their second victory, 89-60.

“Well, we’re still quite shaky because we had several turnovers. We really have to solve that. But overall, they played a good game, a better game than the rest. I told them, number one, we have to focus on defense; number two, we have to focus on passing and sharing the ball, which they did today,” said Ateneo head coach Joe Silva.

Jason Credo top scored Ateneo with 19 points, while Ildefonso and Belangel combined for 23 markers. Manaug and Dulalia paced UE with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

With the victory, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets hold a 2-3 win-loss record, while the UE Junior Warriors have a 1-4 card.
