The early announcements made by Vice President Jejomar Binay and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano in their bid for the highest office of the land in 2016 polls has upset a leading Catholic leader.
Fr. Edwin Gariguez, Executive Secretary of the National Secretariat for Social Action Justice and Peace (Nassa) expressed sadness over Binay and Cayetano about their early announcements for presidential position.
Gariguez said that some politicians have abused Philippine politics to achieve personal ambitions and not to truly transform the country.
“We aspire not for politics of personality but of platform for transformation. We need that to change the system that has been nailed down by personalities,” Gariguez said.
Recently, Binay and Cayetano announced their intention to run for president in the 2016 elections.
Binay is considering former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada or Gov. Vilma Santos to be his running mate for the 2016 polls.
Cayetano, meanwhile announced in a TV news interview that he wanted to run as a president; he has started conducting surveys for his possible presidential bid.
He said that political dynasty in the country will only be good if politicians are using their power for the good of all Filipino people and not for their own interests.
“Once elected, the unscrupulous will just amass more wealth. This is a vicious cycle,” he said.
Further, Gariguez urged the Filipino people to vote for politicians who are highly motivated to work for the common weal.
“Public office is public service. We should politicians that hew to this motivation,” he said.
