THE Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) neutralized over the weekend another criminal gang following the arrest of its leaders and 14 others during an operation on Thursday in Leyte, officials said on Monday.
CIDG Chief, Director Benjamin Magalong said that their operatives in Eastern Visayas under Chief Supt. Joey Bowen Masauding conducted an operation against criminal gangs hiding in Albuera town in Leyte.
The CIDG chief said the operation resulted into the arrest of Rolando Espinosa, leader of the Espinosa Group that operates in the region and known to be involved in various criminal activities.
Magalong said Espinosa and several other members of his group were arrested after CIDG agents served a search warrant against a certain Mona Simban Lombona Gandamasir in Sitio Kanipaan in Barangay Tamnulilid in Tenolho, Ormoc City.
Gandamasir, a member of the Espinosa Group, was able to evade arrest after members of his group fired upon the approaching CIDG operatives apparently to warn other members of the group to scamper to safety.
This led to a brief pursuit operation in which the leader of the group identified as Rolando Espinosa alias Kerwin were arrested by CIDG operatives during the said operation, Magalong said.
