Featherweight fighters Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and Urijah “The California Kid” Faber will collide in the main event of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night in Manila at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City tonight.
Edgar, 33, known for his impressive striking, jiu-jitsu and wrestling skills, assured Filipino fans that he would prevail over favorite Faber in their five-round main event bout.
“First of all, I would like to thank the Philippines for the hospitality. So far, so good I’m enjoying my stay but my main priority is to win the fight,” Edgar, who holds an 18-4-1 win-loss-draw record, told The Manila Times in an interview. “I’m always confident but I respect whoever my opponent is.”
Edgar is coming off a three-fight win streak. He won over Charles Oliveira by decision on July 6, 2013, beat BJ Penn via technical knockout on July 6, 2014, and thumped Cub Swanson with a submission neck crank on November 22, 2014.
Faber, 36, known for his aggressive wrestling and takedowns, said that he is ready for whatever his fellow American Edgar would bring. Faber is expected to rely on his submission skills, a specialty that he already used successfully against 19 fighters via different maneuvers.
“I just have to give the good fight. It’s not going to be easy but I’m ready 100 percent. I’m thankful to fight here in your country,” Faber (32-7 record) said. “Frankie is a real contender that’s why I need to give my best and be cautious, but I’m not nervous.”
Faber, who won back-to-back against Francisco Rivera and Alex Caceres both by submission, is considered one of the best wrestlers and jiu-jitsu experts in mixed martial arts. He earned a wide following among Filipinos after conducting various MMA clinics in Metro Manila.
The other scheduled matches are the following: Filipino-American Mark Muñoz vs 6’6 Englishman Luke Barnatt, Gegard Mousasi vs Costas Philippou, Filipino Mark Eddiva vs Levan Makashvili, Hyun Gyu Lim vs Neil Magny Phillipe Nover vs Yui Chul Nam, Tae Hyun Bang vs Jon Tuck, Zhang Lipeng vs Kajan Johnson, Li Jingliang vs Dhiego Lima, Royston Wee vs Ning Guangyou, Nolan Ticman vs Yao Zhikui, and Filipino Roldan Sangcha-an vs Jon Delos Reyes of Guam.
